Does Islam have a concept of Original Sin? PDF Print E-mail

The notion of original sin is one which Islam emphatically denies, affirming that every human being comes into the world innocent, sinless, and blameless. One need only to look into the eyes of a new born child to see the truth of this statement.

Accordingly, he will only be held accountable for what he inscribes upon the unblemished slate of his nature, not for what his ancestor Adam [or anyone else] did or did not do.

Each individual is responsible for his own deeds:neither sin nor righteousness are hereditory characteristics that can be transfered from one person to another; or which can be carried in the blood or ''nature'' of human beings.

The Qur'an emphasizes this again and again. ''No soul earns anything but against itself, and no burden of burdens shall bear the burden of another.'' (6:164)

It is narrated that Prophet Muhammad said, "Every child is born with a true faith of Islam (i.e. to worship none but Allah Alone) but his parents convert him to Judaism, Christianity or Magainism, as an animal delivers a perfect baby animal. Do you find it mutilated?"
