Allah says in 2:183 of The Holy Qur'an

"O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may guard against evil."

Fasting is a covering from the heat of passions and unbridled lust. It is a divinely prescribed remedy for the diseases of the heart and a vehicle for the cultivation of taqwa[God consciousness]

Even our lawful desires have to be kept in check and not allowed free rein to run wild over our intellect and rational thoughts.

Many of the injustices, evils, and gross imbalances in the world today can be directed attributed to human beings being either unwilling or unable to control their desires.

Fasting is an exercise in which man is able to strenthen his resolve and control his passions so that his passions won't gain mastery over him.
